Moisture Indicators

We offer a wide range of humidity indicators (HI-Cards) for a simple, reliable and visual indication of the relative humidity in a sealed package or sealed environment. Moisture indicators, in conjunction with desiccants, indicate the climate or moisture level inside a package. The moisture indicators are made of special absorbent paper. This paper is partially impregnated with various concentrated cobalt dichloride solutions. The numbers in the impregnated areas show the relative humidity where the color changes from blue to violet to pink. If the humidity decreases again, the coloration changes in reverse order.

The HI-Cards, which are available in numerous configurations, display relative humidities from just 5 percent and up to 95 percent, depending on the application and requirements.

There are two main types of humidity cards: reversible and irreversible.
Reversible humidity indicator cards function much like a thermometer, displaying the current relative humidity.
Maximum or irreversible cards are designed to display the highest relative humidity that the goods have been exposed to.

What are the humidity indicator cards used for?

High relative humidity can cause irreparable damage to sensitive equipment, consumables, products and cargo. For this reason, many industries have implemented strict packaging standards to protect goods from moisture as they are transported and stored throughout the supply chain. While many shippers and manufacturers could take the right steps to protect their products from moisture, such as dry packaging with desiccants, it is sometimes difficult to know how effective these steps are. Some products, such as electronics, often show no visible signs of moisture damage, while desiccants can reach their adsorption capacity before users realize they need to be replaced.

Humidity indicators, or HI cards, provide visual evidence of the relative humidity in a given packaging environment. If the card shows a high humidity level, recognizable by a corresponding staining, users know that they need to replace their desiccant bags and check their products for possible damage.

The HI-Cards we supply comply with numerous industry and environmental standards. Without verifiable color accuracy, the quality of the HI-Cards could be compromised. Our humidity indicator cards are indicators that are tested for color change accuracy within strict industry parameters.

Our wetness indicator (rain indicator) uses the red colour gradient of the umbrella symbol to indicate that the packaging has been exposed to rain or moisture. Attached to the outer packaging of the goods to be shipped (crate, pallet, carton, etc.), it clearly informs the carrier of the transport and storage regulations to be observed. Any damage caused by moisture is thus clearly verifiable and provable.
